Stablecoin

Definición

A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency that aims to maintain a stable value relative to a specific asset or basket of assets, such as fiat currencies (e.g., USD, EUR), commodities (e.g., gold), or other cryptocurrencies. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, stablecoins are designed to minimize price fluctuations, making them more suitable for everyday transactions, savings, and remittances. Stablecoins achieve price stability through various mechanisms, including backing their value with collateral reserves (e.g., fiat currency, other cryptocurrencies), algorithmic stabilization mechanisms, or a combination of both. Common types of stablecoins include fiat-backed stablecoins, crypto-backed stablecoins, and algorithmic stablecoins. Stablecoins offer benefits such as fast and cheap cross-border transactions, accessibility to financial services in regions with unstable currencies, and hedging against crypto market volatility. They have gained popularity in the cryptocurrency space and are widely used in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, remittance services, and as a store of value. However, stablecoins also pose regulatory and systemic risks, particularly regarding their backing reserves, transparency, and potential impact on financial stability.
